Over the last few years creativity in all its forms has been unleashed thanks in no small part to technology, this website is a celebration of that fact. Expect me to waffle on about pretty much anything that might, however tenuously, be linked to art and design.

Canon Vs Nokia N93 Final Verdict!

In this sequence the Nokia N93 wins.

More accurate colours and a shaper image give a much more realistic rendition of the actual scene. The Verdict: To be honest, just looking at these screen grabs is not going to give you a totally accurate feel for the quality of video that the Nokia N93 can capture. In truth, the video just has a completely different look and feel to standard DV video capture. It's not always as warm as DV but in daylight at least, it's nearly always a more vivid capture. Soon I will be comparing video in low light and indoor light, which will should prove interesting . . . check back in a few days.

Very interesting. As you may know, I produce a regular smartphone video podcast, always filmed previously on an 8mm camcorder. But it broke a month ago and I've been playing with the big 'what if?' - could the Nokia N93 replace a camcorder for filming something semi-professional? The jury's still out, but the elegance of using a smartphone for filming a show about smartphones rather appeals to me!

Hi Steve,

I have watched your podcast from time to time, it's nice to watch a video podcast that's not American!! And, of course, one with lots of gadgets!

Unfortunately you might struggle filming your podcast on an N93 due to the lack of autofocus whilst shooting video, you can get pretty close, but probably not quite close enough. I really do see your point however, using a smartphone for filming a smartphone show would be very cool indeed and a great advert for just how far this devices have come.

Out of interest, how did you get into the world of video podcasting?

Take care,
James

Well, as soon as smartphones started recording video at sensible resolutions (352 by 288 pixels, on the Nokia N70) I started using it for day to day filming of family and events. I found I so enjoyed 'messing around with video' that it seemed a logical step, with the advent of widespread video, to start up something both cutting edge and great fun!

It's all good! DV is a hassle so surely the N93 must win in the simplicity stakes too.
